Dr. Sue Willey is in her third year as director of athletics at the University of Indianapolis. The University of Indianapolis excelled under her leadership in 2003-04, finishing 14th in the U.S. Sports Academy Directors' Cup standings. The Hounds had 20 all-Americans during the academic year, including two, NCAA Division II national champions, four Academic all-Americans, a Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) leading five Scholar-Athletes of the Year and 142 Academic all-Conference picks.
Willey began her coaching career at her alma mater after graduating cum laude from the University of Indianapolis in 1975. The versatile Willey coached 23 years at the university, directing 43 different teams in five sports. She earned the GLVC Coach of the Year recognition in softball in 1989, and her softball teams earned national academic honors in 1996 and 1997. Willey earned an incredible 19 letters and 11 MVP awards in her four-year college career. She was the University's Female Athlete of the Year from 1972-75 and was inducted into the University of Indianapolis Athletic Hall of Fame in 1993.
Willey's responsibilities as director of athletics include important campus, conference and NCAA committee assignments. She became the first female to serve on the President's Cabinet and is a member of the Enrollment Management Committee, as well as the Financial Aid and Policies Committee. Willey begins a four-year term on the softball regional ranking committee for the Great Lakes Region in spring 2005 and also serves on the Great Lakes Valley Conference Executive Committee.
Currently, Dr. Willey is serving her fourth and final year on the NCAA Division II Management Council after serving last year as its Chair. Her current Management Council responsibilities include membership on the DII Budget and Finance Committee, DII Student-Athlete Reinstatement Committee, DII Management Council Identity Subcommittee, DII Championships Regionalization Task Force, DII Project Team to Review Issues Related to Diversity, and DII Championships Eligibility Project Team.
Willey is in her 29th year at the University of Indianapolis and holds a master's degree and a doctorate from Indiana University. She is an associate professor of kinesiology and has been teaching in the department for more than 25 years with a special teaching interest is in the area of sport ethics. |
