Title IX
Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 is a law that requires gender equity for men and women in every educational program that receives federal funding. Although NACWAA is primarily interested in how this law impacts the equal access to and fair treatment of men’s and women’s athletics programs, Title IX also requires gender equity in nine other areas of education: access to higher education, career education, education for pregnant and parenting students, employment, learning environment, math and science, sexual harassment, standardized testing and technology. However, for the purposes of NACWAA, we will focus on Title IX and how it affects athletics.
Do you have a Title IX story that you would like to share? The National Women's Law Center is collecting stories of parents, students, and coaches who have experienced discrimination in sports. In particular, they are interested in stories in the districts where they filed high school complaints. You can see a chart of the school districts and states HERE. Please contact Neena Chaudhry (nchaudhry@nwlc.org) at NWLC to submit your story.
