CBS to Purchase CSTV
The NCAA News, November 3, 2005
CBS will purchase CSTV Networks Inc. early next year for a $325 million price tag. CSTV is a digital media forum devoted entirely to college sports. CSTV founder and CEO Brian Bedol will continue to operate the new cable entity, but will report to CBS chairman Leslie Moonves. Bedol founded CSTV after creating the Classic Sports Network, now ESPN Classic.
The acquisition includes CSTV's digital cable network that features 30 men's and women's college sports events and has nearly 15 million subscribers as well as online properties featuring more than 250 official college athletic Web sites. Also included in the sale are the CSTV Web site and the planned Regional College Sports Networks to be launched in 2006, which will feature sporting events of both the Mountain West Conference and Conference USA. The acquisitions will make the CBS Corporation's sports Web audience larger than any other online medium with 19 million unique users.
