By Jena Hubbard, UW, December 8, 2005

The University of Washington announced that it will offer the nation's first master's degree focused on developing leaders for college athletics organizations. Scheduled for a summer 2006 start, the University of Washington Master of Education in Intercollegiate Athletic Leadership will teach students the leadership and business skills necessary to lead successful careers in intercollegiate athletics.

Offered through the University of Washington's College of Education, ranked #17 in the nation by U.S. News & World Report, the 12-month program will help students acquire a number of core competencies essential to hold leadership positions in higher education or within an athletics department.

”This program will set the standard for the preparation of leaders within intercollegiate athletics,” said Jim Antony, executive director of the University of Washington Master of Education in Intercollegiate Athletic Leadership.

Core leadership and business competencies acquired through the program include NCAA compliance rules and regulations; ethical and moral implications of athletics as an extension of a university; program assessment and evaluation; budget and financial management skills; marketing and advertising in sports, and technology systems and their application in athletics administration.
