Give Us Your Tired, Your Weary, Your Athletes Yearning to Matriculate

In the vernacular of team sports, using a ringer is a highly charged activity. It is totally abhorrent when the other guy beats you by using ringers but it's okay when one's own team gets a little help from the outside.
Nowadays, in college athletics – and pros too – there has been a decided tilt toward international athletes. In college athletics, here's the evidence:
* Rosters for several sports are comprised of more than 20% foreign players: men's and women's tennis and men's and women's ice hockey.
* The percentage of male foreigners competing in D1 increased from 2.4% to 4.4% over the past five years. For females it more than doubled to 5%.
* Overall, there were 7296 foreign student-athletes in D1 in 2003-04. 18.9% of those were men's and women's tennis players; 7.3% were men's and women's basketball players.
